In 2020, tech titan Elon Musk made headlines by announcing that he would sell all his properties, vowing to “own no house”. Cut to 2024, the world’s richest person has secretly bought a 14,400-square-foot compound in Texas for $35 million (Rs 295 crore) to house all his 11 children and his three former partners, according to a report in The New York Times.
The compound includes two properties resembling an Italian Tuscan villa and a six-bedroom home directly behind it. Sources told NYT that Musk was keen on maintaining secrecy, and he made the sellers of the properties sign non-disclosure agreements.
“He offered some homeowners 20 to 70 per cent above the value of their houses,” the NYT report said quoting sources.
The NYT, citing people close to Musk, said it would make it easier for him to “schedule time” for his youngest kids. Musk also wants the younger ones to “be a part of one another’s lives”.
Elon Musk has five children with his first wife, Justine Wilson. The couple were married from 2000 to 2008. He has three children with singer Grimes. However, Musk and Grimes are embroiled in a legal battle over the kids’ custody. The billionaire also has three children with Shivon Zilis, an executive at Musk-owned Neuralink.
Zilis, 38, has already moved into one of the properties with her children, the NYT reported.
Musk, who has been vocal about expressing his concerns on declining birth rates, has also “offered his own sperm to friends and acquaintances”. One of them, according to the NYT, was former independent vice presidential candidate Nicole Shanahan. Shanahan, who has previously denied reports of having an affair with Musk, had turned down his offer.
Earlier this year, Musk said he believed that a global population collapse was coming that would wipe out humanity. “It should be considered a national emergency to have kids,” Musk posted in June.
